Cincinnati Black Theatre Company Receives Nominations for 2 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards

CityBeat, Cincinnatis alternative weekly newspaper, announced recently that Cincinnati Black Theatre Company (CBTC) received Cincinnati Entertainment Award (CEA) nominations in two categories for performances during CBTCs 2004-2005 Season.

Cincinnati Black Theatre Company's "Ain't Misbehavin'" was nominated for two awards: Best Ensemble Acting Performance and Best Community Theater Production. In nominating Cincinnati Black Theatre Company for Ain't Misbehavin' for the best ensemble acting performance category, CityBeat's Theater Critic Rick Pender wrote, "Cincinnati's only theater focused on African-American talent and works by black creators assembled a top-notch cast to recreate the music of 'Fats' Waller who wrote the score for the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s. They captured the humor and attitude of a vibrant period in American history."

In nominating Ain't Misbehavin' for a second award for the best community theater production, Pender wrote, "Performing at Cincinnati State's ATLC Auditorium, CBTC presented this 1978 classic that brought to life the age of the Cotton Club and honky-tonk dives in New York's Harlem, ca. 1930, through the music of the inimitable 'Fats' Waller."

Sixteen local theater companies were nominated for the 2005 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards by theater critics, writers and insiders. Awards will be handed out in 19 theater categories; winners in 12 categories are chosen by a public vote in CityBeat and on citybeat.com, while winners in the remaining Critical Achievement categories are selected by the CEA nominating committee of area theater critics and writers. Winners in all categories will be announced at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards ceremony on August 26, 2005.

The Friday night gala event is at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music's Corbett Auditorium on the University of Cincinnati campus. The CEA program begins at 8 pm and will feature performances from several nominees, in addition to other theatrical entertainments. Tickets for the event can be purchased for $15 in advance; $20 at the door. There is also a VIP pre-show reception for $50 that begins at 6:30 pm. All proceeds benefit LINKS (Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids), a program sponsored by CCM to provide needy children with reconditioned musical instruments.
