The story is focused on Maureen Denverley, a young heiress with a tragic family past. She comes to England from Australia to claim the family estate left to her by late stepfather, Christopher Hodgarthy. Maureen seems to be well provided for but soon her life becomes endangered by the murky effects of a bygone affair involving Hodgarthy and his army comrades from World War II.

After the war, Hodgarthy became a very successful racecar driver. Alas, his life was cut short on the track in an unfortunate accident. But a letter he wrote to his stepdaughter just before his sudden death raises questions about the circumstances of this tragic event.

At Maureen's request, James Brent—a writer and amateur detective who is her distant relative—digs into the dead man's past. There he discovers curious links to Hodgarthy's army squad comrades. Life insurance is involved and Brent tries to figure out the real post-war relationship of the men from the old army squad. While putting together the pieces he uncovers from the past, Brent realizes that Maureen may be the target of a pending murder. But, in a twist, another murder takes place and Maureen becomes the prime suspect instead. In a frantic effort to save her and to find the error in his earlier chain of logic, Brent finally resolves the puzzle when he discovers that a fact he formerly took for granted isn't a fact at all.

Jocelyn and Kester Brent are the pen names of Jerzyna Slomczynska and Kazimierz M. Slomczynski, originally from Poland where they lived for a considerable part of their lives. They are scientists, each representing different fields: Jerzyna—computational physics and engineering, Kazimierz—sociology and political science. Longing to write together, they chose literature rather than science. An appreciation of logical thinking and interest in puzzle solving led them to mystery writing.

While still in Poland, they published two widely read novels and wrote a mystery play that was produced and shown on national TV. After coming to live in the United States—where Jerzyna devotes most of her time to writing and translation and Kazimierz (a.k.a. Maciek or Kaz) is a professor at The Ohio State University—they continued their literary activities.
