PromptPal - Dragging The Command Prompt Into The XP Age

Technology Lighthouse has released PromptPal, a fresh new user interface for Microsoft's command prompt console. PromptPal turns this old but indispensable command line tool into a modern and helpful Windows program. Its rich editing facilities will save you time, frustration and finger-wear.

(PRWEB) September 1, 2005 -- Technology Lighthouse has released PromptPal, a fresh new user interface for Microsoft's command prompt console. PromptPal turns this old but indispensable command line tool into a modern and helpful Windows program. Its rich editing facilities will save you time, frustration and finger-wear.

PromptPal gives you full Windows-style editing, complete with drag-and-drop and the standard keyboard shortcuts. As you type a new instruction, PromptPal suggests matches from its history and an extendable list of more than 140 standard commands. It prompts you with common switches and options as soon as it recognizes a command, and lets you enter folder and file paths using the friendly Windows interface. You can even drag files into PromptPal to insert their paths.

When you issue an instruction PromptPal invisibly executes it using Microsoft's own command processor, and displays the results. Two display formats are available - single pane view, and a dual pane view that separates commands from output. You can quickly save the contents of a pane to file, making it easy to create batch files.

PromptPal comes with an optional band that lives in your Windows task bar, alongside the Start button. This versatile companion acts like a hybrid of the Windows "Run..." box and the command prompt. Invocations of command-line utilities are automatically launched in a new PromptPal window. Other commands are executed in a similar way to the "Run..." box. For example, you can launch Regedit or Notepad, or type %temp% to open an Explorer window at your temporary directory.

You can configure both PromptPal and the band to match the way you work. You have control over the command and path histories, editing and display preferences, and you can easily add to the list of recognized commands. Additionally PromptPal integrates with the Windows shell. Right-clicking on a drive or folder allows you to open a new PromptPal window directly at that location.

PromptPal is designed for use on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server.
