Infectious Diseases in Flood Waters Caused by Hurricane Katrina Could Lead to Death

With local hospitals and pharmacies closing and stagnant flood waters causing widespread contamination of bacteria and viruses, Louisiana residents are on the verge of a health epidemic. At least six hospitals run by Tenet Healthcare Corp. and HCA Inc., including Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans, have suspended operations and evacuated patients. While these highly contagious viruses and bacterial infections are life-threatening, they do not need to take the lives of people if they get proper medical attention and medications in time.

(PRWEB) September 3, 2005 -- With local hospitals and pharmacies closing and stagnant flood waters causing widespread contamination of bacteria and viruses, Louisiana residents are on the verge of a health epidemic.

Flood waters and stagnant sewage are a breeding ground for the rats, rodents, and mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as the Hepatitis A, Cholera, Typhoid, and other viruses. Local supplies of vaccines, unprepared for this natural disaster will not be sufficient," states Dr. Jose Luis Soto, the nations leading medication and pharmacy expert.

Cholera is an infectious disease of the gastrointestinal tract caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. These bacteria are typically spread by being exposed to water contaminated by sewage. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. The Cholera antibiotics must be provided as quickly as possible after exposure to prevent this potentially life-threatening condition.

Another disease that is threatening Hurricane Katrina victims, due to contaminated water, is Hepatitis A, which is an inflammatory viral disease of the liver with a short incubation period that has caused many deaths, primarily in children. The Hepatitis A vaccine must be applied immediately to anyone who has made contact with stagnant waters because even people without symptoms have probably been infected.

Hundreds of foreign and domestic pharmacies that have passed rigorous screening measures are available to supply as much Cholera treatments and Hepatitis A vaccines as needed. Each pharmacy has been verified to provide phone or online consultations from a licensed pharmacist, have a valid pharmacy license, a physical location, ship brand-name authentic products, and provide excellent customer service. The pharmacies are available to ship medications via FedEx, overnight, and to provide free medical consultations for victims of Katrina.
