The title of the book is AUSTRALIA – Republic or US Colony? (329 pp.) Author Dr. Klaas Woldring of Pearl Beach, Sydney, Australia is a former Professor of Southern Cross University and is active in such community organisations as Beyond Federation and Republic Now! The Paperback version retails at US $15.00. A download version is available at US$ 3.00 through Lulu.
The book is in three parts: In Part A a number of current issues are discussed in the context of the lead-up to the 2004 election, the election itself and its aftermath. In Part B the various aspects of the Head of State in a Republic are highlighted on the basis of a comparative approach. Fifteen modern Republics are examined. In Part C the much wider questions What Kind of a Republic?" and How to achieve it?" are tackled.
The author added: transferring the Australian Governments colonial attitude to the US, as evidenced by the unspeakable subservience towards the Bush Administration, is no substitute for focusing the attention on the urgent need for an Independent Republic. This debate needs to develop a strategic approach whereby the entire Constitution is on the table for possible change. In such a debate all Australians need to be involved so that they will own and value the end product. Rather than restrict the debate to Minimal issues, as happened in the 1990s, the debate should move on to Maximalism. Frequent plebiscites and referendums should be part of that. The archaic Constitution is a massive hindrance in the way of meaningful reform. Its high time that Australians and their media wake up to this reality".
