Hand to Hands Inc.” a humanitarian and social welfare arm of the Muslims of the Americas, Inc. and the International Quranic Open University has sent its representatives to the Houston, Texas area to directly assist victims of Hurricane Katrina with much needed blankets, clothing, food and first aid supplies as well as to establish a Crisis Intervention Counseling Center.

The agency with chapters throughout the US and Canada convened an emergency meeting via teleconference and within hours dozens of representatives responded and were in route to victim relief shelters in Houston and surrounding areas. “We are serving families whose needs may not be met by other social service agencies…as American citizens it is our desire as well as our responsibility to extend a helping hand in light of this catastrophe” said Sheereen Begum, National President.

Hand to Hands Inc., a non profit social services agency dedicated to helping uplift the social and economic status of women and children was founded by, a pioneer of such charitable causes, El Sheikh Syed Mohyuddin Mubarik Ali Shah Gilani, the Chancellor of the International Quranic Open University. For over 25 years the International Quranic Open University under the direction of El Sheikh Gilani has educated Muslim families in their role and responsibility as American citizens. El Sheik Gilani has established numerous self owned Islamic villages in rural American and Canada where Muslim from the inner cities can find a better environment for raising their families. Striving to gain “self reliance” residents learn the ins and outs of farming and animal husbandry

Hand to Hands, Inc,. as a Muslim American group, is sensitive to the special needs of Muslim families in the ravaged areas who may have lost religious items very dear to them such as Holy Qurans, religious books, and traditional Islamic clothing.

Hence the agency is working in conjunction with various agencies to provide that which no other local, state or federal agency can offer, religious support and counseling. The agencies volunteers arrived in Houston from throughout America and met with members of MOA, IQOU and the local chapter members of Hand to Hands Inc. who were already on the ground working in Houston’s Astrodome laboring and administrating.

Hurricane Katrina hit the US Gulf Coast just outside the city of New Orleans on August 29th and swept devastation though the area with winds of up to 145 mph. Texas officials estimate about 100,000 Louisiana residents are staying in hotels and motels across the state and another 140,000 are being temporarily housed in 140 shelters throughout the state of Texas and across the USA.

El Sheikh Gilani has directed over 100 Muslim Boy Scouts of the IQOU and Muslim ladies organization Banaat tun Noor (Daughters of Light) to be activated throughout the USA offering aid in other cities that house Katrina victims and to establish “Drop Off” sites where much needed relief materials and supplies may be brought. El Sheikh Gilani and his followers are quite experienced in providing aid in relief efforts as they have in the past freely provided aid and assistance to the victims of the Tsunami of 2004, and the victims of the 2001 Sept. 11th terrorist attack on America. In all instances El Sheikh Gilani and the agencies and organizations he directs are committed to responding to all those in need with no absolutely no discrimination to ethnicity or religion .

Any person(s), agency or organization which would like to contribute aid or assistance in this crucial effort are encouraged and welcomed to send their contributions or donations to: Hand to Hands Social Service Agency, PO Box 1082 Binghamton, New York 13903.
