Greenwich-Based Orthopaedics Center Introduces Computer-Assisted Knee Surgery

Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS)in Greenwich, CT is one of a handful of medical centers in the United States to offer computer-assisted total knee replacement surgery. This groundbreaking technique uses computerized surgical navigation in order to more precisely align the joint during joint replacement surgery.

GREENWICH, CT (PRWEB) September 23, 2005 -- Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists, PC (ONS) has recently joined the handful of medical centers in the United States that offer computer-assisted total knee replacement surgery. This groundbreaking technique uses computerized surgical navigation in order to more precisely align the joint during joint replacement surgery. Used successfully in Europe since the late 1990s, the technology and surgical procedure have only recently been introduced in the U.S.

ONS joint replacement specialist Dr. Frank A. Ennis is among a small but increasing number of orthopaedic surgeons in the New York metropolitan region with the necessary training and experience in computer-assisted surgery for total knee and hip replacement. Fellowship trained at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Dr. Ennis specializes in adult reconstructive surgery for the hip and knee, complex revision arthroplasty of the hip and knee, treatment of complications from hip fractures, and hip arthroscopy.

Dr. Ennis expertise in this new area of joint replacement technology is very exciting for the patients in the Greenwich/New York area," says Greenwich Hospital Department of Orthopedics Director Dr. John Crowe. By using the computer to fine-tune the proper alignment and rotation of the implant, the surgeon provides the patient with the best chance to obtain excellent range of motion of the joint and achieve better long-term results."

After completing post-baccalaureate pre-medical studies at Harvard University, Dr. Ennis graduated from Duke University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Yale University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. During his fellowship training at New England Baptist Hospital he performed approximately 650 joint replacement surgeries including numerous computer assisted knee and hip replacements.

Computer Assisted Surgery
Computer assisted surgery for total knee replacement is the newest generation of technology in joint replacement. For the first time, surgeons are able to create a visual map of the knee via a highly precise image guidance system that allows the surgeon to see beyond what is possible with the naked eye. This enables the surgeon to achieve extremely accurate alignment of the implant for the patient. Using infrared cameras and digitized images, every aspect of the operation is tracked by computer including the surgical instrumentation and ultimately the positioning of the implant.

ONS is the only combined orthopaedic and neurosurgery practice in Fairfield and Westchester counties. Combining the two disciplines makes it possible to provide a unique total-body approach to musculoskeletal care. ONS patients benefit from the collective training and experience of thirteen specialized surgeons and three non-surgical specialists who treat a wide variety of conditions from sports injuries to arthritis to complex fractures to revision surgeries. ONS physicians are trained at the premier medical universities and hospitals in the United States and perform the latest techniques including arthroscopy, joint replacement, minimally invasive surgery, spine and brain surgery, all of which are performed at Greenwich Hospital. Physical and occupational therapists, athletic trainers, physicians assistants, nurses and a massage therapist complete the ONS patient-care team.
