It was an Easy Fundraising Project - Living with It 13 Years Later

A Brick Fundraising Project made a lot of money for a high school in 1992. We talk to the principal about having it around 13 years later.

(PRWEB) December 1, 2005 -- In 1992, fundraising with memorial bricks generated $100,000 for Columbus High School in Columbus GA.    The plan was simple: for $35 a graduating senior could have their name engraved on a brick. Over 3,000 engraved bricks went into a wall surrounding a 6 foot brick sculpture of the school logo. Subtract the cost of the bricks and design and the remaining funds paid for construction and landscaping.

We spoke with the current principal of Columbus High School – Susan Bryant - to see how the brick wall, now 13 years old, is faring.

Ms. Bryant says that over the 13 years, there has been no graffiti on the wall, even though the school itself suffers the occasional prank, and the wall is located close to an intersection.    After 13 years, Ms. Bryant says that the wall is “beautiful. It adds to the school and gives everyone a place in the history of the school”.

Thinking over the wall, she pointed out that “having a brick gives alumni a part of the history of the community…a ‘forever’ part of history.”

People stop by looking for various names.    “You lose your annuals, but the brick is there, a permanent piece of history.”

A fundraising plaza generated $45,000 in 2002, and she’d like to do more projects if she could think of places to put them.

When asked about the problems, she responded instantly that it needs occasional pressure cleaning. And “there are only so many bricks you can add.”

“People contribute to show that they’ve been in this school, as a keepsake.”
