Good Samaritan Hospital Celebrates Vibrancy of New Life as Over 100 Surviving Children and Families Gather to Honor Dedicated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses

Good Samaritan Hospital’s 15th Annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion celebrated the strength and exuberance of the young lives that survived thanks to the dedication and care of nurses and health care professionals at the Suffern, NY hospital. The reunion joined together hundreds of patients and their families with the nurses and doctors whose dedication and care helped them to maintain their lives during the critical first days, weeks, and months following a premature or difficult birth.

(PRWEB) November 30, 2005 -- Good Samaritan Hospital’s 15th Annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion on Sunday, November 20 celebrated the strength and exuberance of the young lives that survived thanks to the dedication and care of nurses and health care professionals at the Suffern, NY hospital. The reunion, held at the Holiday Inn in Montebello, joined together hundreds of patients and their families with the nurses and doctors whose dedication and care helped them to maintain their lives during the critical first days, weeks, and months following a premature or difficult birth.

“Good Samaritan Hospital has always prided itself on maintaining a focus on meeting not only the critical healthcare needs of the critically ill infant in our NICU, but also on attending to the spiritual, emotional, and mental needs of mother and father,” noted Liz Ponte, the hospital’s director for women’s and children’s services. “This event is just a way for us to continue to celebrate the vibrancy of new life, and to reunite families with the special caregivers in whose capable hands they put the lives of their precious newborn babies.”

Good Samaritan Hospital opened its two newborn nurseries and the Level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which provides “high tech - high touch” care for ill and premature babies, in 1990. The unit cares for premature and critically ill babies from among the 400 babies born annually in the hospital’s Union State Bank Birthing Center, as well as many transferred to the unit from other area hospitals.

“The loyal and caring nurses in our NICU have an unbelievable amount of love, care, and strength in helping the critically ill infants. They are truly the backbone of the unit,” said Dr. Glenn Mendoza, MD, head of the hospital’s Department of Neonatology. “This event honors and recognizes their care, service and dedication.”

At the event, parents had the chance to reconnect with the nurses and doctors from the NICU, and to “show off” the progress of their children. The event was a fun-filled affair for the children, as they played and were entertained by balloons, crafts and volunteers dressed up in traditional pilgrim-like Thanksgiving attire.
