Launched in 1998, FNGLA’s Florida Plants of the Year program promotes the use of under-utilized, but proven, Florida plant material. Ornamentals are selected on an annual basis by a group of growers, horticulturists, retailers, landscape professionals, and University of Florida faculty.
Both industry and consumer displays promote the program and plant selections throughout the year at various events from industry tradeshows to botanical garden events to consumer educational sessions ensuring selections are kept in the public eye year-round. Consumers can obtain Florida Plants of the Year and plant care details at virtually any independent garden center located within the state.
“Our intent is to educate consumers on the value of specific plants which tend to be under-utilized but are basically fantastic plants for Florida. With the program in its eighth year, there are many plants with a variety of characteristics for consumers to pick their favorities,” said Chris Reese of Greenbriar Nurseries, Inc., Ocala, FL.
Consumers and indsutry alike can view all plants selected as Florida Plants of the year at FNGLA’s consumer website, http://www.floridagardening.org.
FNGLA is the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association representing Florida's environmental horticulture industry, with an estimated $9.9 billion in industry-wide sales. For more information on FNGLA’s Florida Plants of the Year, call FNGLA at 800.375.3642 or send a fax to 407.295.1619.
