Southwest Airlines Celebrates Five Years of 'LUV' in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) October 7, 2005 -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and its 43 local Employees today celebrate five years of service at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

"Southwest Airlines is pleased with the positive impact it has had on the Buffalo community over the last five years," said Greg Wells, Southwest Airline's Vice President of Ground Operations. "With Southwest Airlines' frequent flights and low fares from Buffalo, more New York residents have been able to enjoy a convenient, high-value option for air travel."

Southwest Airlines began service to Buffalo on Oct. 8, 2000, with ten daily nonstop departures to Baltimore/Washington, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Phoenix. Today, Southwest operates 14 daily nonstop departures from Buffalo to six cities: Baltimore/Washington, Chicago Midway, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay with direct or connecting service to 34 additional cities. The airline occupies two gates at the airport.

Other noteworthy Buffalo statistics:

  • Since Southwest Airlines began service in Buffalo, the airline has grown to capture 19.7 percent of the market share as of first quarter 2005.

  • In 2004, Southwest Airlines handled more than 702,630 Customers at Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

  • In 1999, the Buffalo airport handled 3,279,600 passengers. In 2001, after Southwest Airlines had been in the Buffalo market for just one year, the Buffalo airport handled 4,097,890 passengers, an increase of
25 percent.

  • Before Southwest Airlines began service in Buffalo, the average one-way fare paid by Buffalo Customers was $144. As of first quarter 2005, the average one-way fare paid was $113, a decrease of 22 percent.

Buffalo-based Members of Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program have reason to celebrate as well. Rapid Rewards Members flying in to or out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Oct. 7, 2005, will receive a bonus credit in honor of Southwest Airlines' fifth anniversary in Buffalo.

"The people of Buffalo have been good to us," said Craig Vaughn, Southwest Airlines Buffalo Station Manager. "The additional Rapid Rewards credit is a token of our appreciation for their business and loyalty."

Based in Dallas, Southwest Airlines currently operates more than 3,000 flights a day. The carrier began service to Ft. Myers. Fla., its newest destination, on Oct. 2, 2005.
