The Perro de Presa Canario originated from the Canary Islands. The ancestors of the Perro de Presa Canario were probably brought to the Canary Island by the Spanish Conquistadors, around the beginning of the fifteenth century. They guarded the farms, helped catch and hold cattle, and kept wild or stray dogs away. In the early to mid 1940s, the breed began to drop and started to be revived again in the early to mid 1970s, when reputable breeders developed and bred Presas true to their original size and character.

The main characteristics of the Presa are to guard its home, family and to herd and hold cattle. This requires a courageous, powerful, agile dog with powerful jaws.
The Presas are very affectionate, docile and well behaved dog with its owner and family. Presas are very wary of strangers. And has the tendacy to be aggressive with other dogs if not properly socialized. Remember time must be spent with the dog.
The Perro de Presa Canario may also be refered to as Presa Canario, Dogo Canario or Presas. There is however, a difference in the Dogo Canario and the true Perro de Presa Canario. The Perro de Presa Canario has no maximum weight as long as the Perro de Presa Canario is well proportioned. There is also an average weight of 100lbs - 120lbs for females and 125lbs and up for males. Where as the male Dogo Canario maximum weight is 125lbs. Black is not a reconized color of the Dogo Canario.
The Perro de Presa Canario is recognized by the AKC, UKC and the United Perro de Presa Canario Club (UPPCC), which has a strict set of rules and code of ethnics to be followed.
