(PRWEB) January 5, 2006 -- In 1975, Saralee Sky was a back-to-the-land hippie living in the coastal hills of Northern California (where else?) when the seeds of Babynut were planted. She had her first child at home with midwives and the experience made her determined to support other mothers with holistic choices for pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. “While I was pregnant and during my labor,” Ms Sky says, “the midwives were present and supportive, helping me ease into my pregnancy and, eventually, give birth without the aid of drugs. I had my first baby at home with lots of friends and neighbors present. It was a blissful event. Then, after Joseph was born, everyone disappeared, leaving me to learn how to take care of him on my own. It was a difficult and scary time for me. I decided then that post-partum support was just as important as help during the pregnancy and delivery. By the time my second child was born at home five years later, I knew what help I would need and was able to ask for it.”
Ms Sky eventually went on to receive her Masters Degree in Psychology and was a therapist to severely abused children, as well as the executive director of three nonprofit agencies serving children. But she never forgot her hippie roots and the desire to help other women with natural pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. The birth of her own grandchildren rekindled her desire to support young mothers, and so Babynut was born.
Babynut was launched two years ago in November, 2003, and provides natural, alternative and organic products and information for pregnancy, adoption, childbirth, parenting, babies and toddlers. Ms Sky says, “I take a wisdom-laced-with-humor approach. Babynut is my way of combining my hippie roots and my professional expertise to work with a population that I love - mothers and babies!”
Based in Bellingham, Washington, Babynut does business solely on the World Wide Web. Products for sale include topsy turvy dolls with herbs in their bonnets and baby sleeping bags with colorful Mexican fabrics, both designed by Sky when she was a hippie. Also for sale are: natural and organic cotton maternity, nursing, baby and toddler clothes, books on pregnancy, natural childbirth and parenting, children’s books and music, wooden toys and puzzles, gift baskets, baby carriers, body products, alternative medicine, astrology charts and clothing with astrological signs specially designed for Babynut. Another special feature of the site is a free newsletter, “Nutsense!” with articles on natural childbirth and parenting written by Ms Sky.
