Re-defining who and what is art is a passion for many artists and performers in SF. In 1990 Diet Popstitute (along with the infamous Popstitutes) opened KLUBSTiTUTE which begat PLAYSTiTUTE, the KLUBSTiTUTE KOLLECTiVE, The Virgin Queen Contest, PROMSTiTUTE, The Faux Queen Pageant and countless other tragedies infecting the stale nightlife and reinvigorating zany fun into the cold netherworld of Sodom by the Bay.
"We are the bitches that get things done." --Diet Popstitute
"KLUBSTiTUTE was one of my reasons for moving to San Francisco." -- Larry Bob
"Nowadays, medical marijuana is all the rage but in 1995 it was a bunch of stoners trying to organize. Diet, who was visionary, said he wanted to help. He himself was, I believe, clean and sober so wouldn't partake but wanted other people dying from AIDS to have access. And so was born La Klubstituta ala Oasis which became the seed money for California's Proposition 215 that was passed by the voters. Diet was in the hospital the night of the event and died within days of that night which was also our first Virgin Drag Queen contest. Fittingly La Lupe Sativa was the winner, one of the worst drag queens at the time but with an amazing energy. She went on to perform at every chance and was one of our most productive title holders." --Sister Kitty Catalyst OCP, uber-nun and homo-propagandist.
