Remote Control Cabinet Power Distribution for Blade Server Applications

CDU’s provide remote control and supply power to high-density server applications.

Many of our customers had asked for higher-capacity CDU’s

Server Technology, Inc. announced new Cabinet (Power) Distribution Units (CDU’s) designed to provide power to high density server applications with remote control. Increased density and processing capacity from Blade applications are resulting in increasing power requirements within today’s data centers. To accommodate these increased demands, Server Technology introduced the new line of CDU's that are targeted to Blade applications.

The new Sentry units distribute 3-Phase power within the equipment cabinet in 30 amp and 60 amp applications. These devices provide over 8.5 kW to 17 kW (derated) of available power per a single feed to the cabinet, greatly reducing infrastructure costs. These products provide a range of capabilities from basic cabinet power distribution to intelligent products that have remote control access through IP or Serial connections as well as remote environmental monitoring for both temperature and humidity. Capabilities include the ability to remotely power cycle an individual or group of outlets, power up sequencing as well as the ability to turn off unused power receptacles to ensure that circuits are not overloaded. Power up sequencing can limit the inrush current to just one server and ensures that both power supplies of a dual-supply server receive power simultaneously to avoid load imbalances and averts cumulative inrush that could other wise trip the upstream circuit breaker. Other features include, current monitoring for phase balancing and cabinet optimization. Enterprise View provides the ability for remote control of a large network of CDU’s from one location via a single web interface.

The Sentry CDU’s provide solutions for high density cabinets as well as meeting the stringent requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 60950-1, which is now required for all new 30 A and higher rack level PDU’s.

“Many of our customers had asked for higher-capacity CDU’s," explains Jim Maskaly, Engineering Manager for the company's product development group. “We continually test power requirements in our lab for many of the new servers from leading manufacturers, including blade, blade cluster and mid-range. From this analysis and working closely with our customers, we developed these solutions which are already implemented in enterprise data centers. The combination of high density and high power distribution in the Sentry CDU products has been particularly valuable in the banking and financial sectors, where our three-phase products are being widely used.”

Server Technology, Inc. designs and manufactures intelligent power distribution products for enterprise data centers, service providers and branch office locations. Founded in 1984, the company is recognized as a leader in innovative Remote Power Management solutions. The company’s line of Sentry™ power products eliminates unnecessary trips to remote locations and minimizes the impact of locked-up internet working equipment on business critical networks, combining intelligent power distribution, remote control and power measurement.
