Teachers Given Cards to Learn How to Teach Spoken English

Most school children have to give a talk, speech or presentation at least once in their school life and it’s the job of the teacher to help them choose a topic, to help them deliver it so that everyone can hear them and to give them enough confidence so that they sleep at night. The question is, who teaches the teachers? After years of study Serena Greenslade A.N.E.A. discovered that most of the teachers have no idea how to teach children to use expressive speech.

(PRWEB) January 15, 2006 -- Teachers of English, at least in the UK, are taught how to teach English Literature and English language but not how to teach spoken English.

“There seems to be a misunderstanding,” Serena says, “amongst teachers that the children who read a lot to themselves are going to be just as brilliant at reading out loud. The reality is that their eyes can read faster than the listeners can listen and faster, in some cases, than their mouths can move. Consequently they’re not necessarily the best public speakers. To excel at Spoken English children requires very different skills than they do for written English. They need to understand how to breathe, how to stand, what to wear, the difference between vowel and consonant sounds, the importance of the pause etc.”

Having taught hundreds of children how to give their school talk on anything from frogs to designer handbags and numerous teachers how to teach the children, Serena has now created a series of cards which are written for children aged 6 – 16 years. These cards cover all aspects of the presentation from choosing the topic to knowing what to wear and they are written so that the children themselves can understand them.

The teachers pack comes with a set of 14 A4 photocopiable laminated cards and a 41 page book so that the teacher can build and expand on the cards.

There is also a set of A5 cards which parents can purchase so that they can help the children at home or so that older children can help themselves. The cards come in their own plastic wallet so that they can easily be put into a school bag for a last minute confidence boost.
