Transgender Law Center Applauds Huffman's Golden Globe Recognition
Felicity Huffman’s Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of transgender woman in TransAmerica groundbreaking.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) January 18, 2006 -- The Transgender Law Center (TLC) applauds the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) selection of Felicity Huffman for Best Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama. On Monday night, Ms. Huffman was recognized for her portrayal of Bree, a transgender woman meeting the son she never knew she had and confronting the family who never knew her for who she is.
In Bree, Ms. Huffman and the film’s writer/director, Duncan Tucker, created a complex character struggling, and often stumbling, to show her true self to the world. "I know as actors our job is usually to shed our skins,” said Ms. Huffman in accepting her award. “But I think as people our job is to become who we really are and so I would like to salute the men and women who brave ostracism, alienation and a life lived on the margins to become who they really are."
“It’s great that a film like TransAmerica got made,” said TLC Deputy Director Cecilia Chung. “It’s almost unbelievable that it was made so well and that the HFPA was able to recognize the dignity and depth the Felicity brought to Bree’s character. Too often transgender people, especially transgender women, are used as an easy joke. In a way that was true to the experiences of many women, this film turned that practice on its head and showed how interesting and ordinary our lives can be.”
“What is so great about this film for me is that Ms. Huffman clearly gets it,” said TLC Director Christopher Daley. “In the press around the film and the award, she has been eloquent in speaking about transgender people and about her experience in making this film. That respect comes through in her willingness to show Bree’s bad choices as well as her good so that audiences can see a real character instead of the caricature that has become so familiar in the way in which transgender women are portrayed.”
“With films like this leading the way, my hope is that writers, producers, and actors will now begin to look for ways to bring to life the enormous diversity of our community,” said Chung. “Transgender people come in many varied forms and I think we’d all like to see more of those forms take shape in theaters and television sets in the near future.”
