Algerian Desalination Project Completes Environmental Impact Assessment with Metoc, UK environmental engineers

Metoc plc, the environmental engineering consultancy based in Hampshire, UK, has completed a contract with Hamma Water Desalination Spa - a joint venture between GE Water & Process Technologies and Algerian Energy Company Spa.

(PRWEB) January 30, 2006 -- Metoc plc, the environmental engineering consultancy based in Hampshire, UK, has completed a contract with Hamma Water Desalination Spa - a joint venture between GE Water & Process Technologies and Algerian Energy Company Spa. The contract provided a comprehensive environmental impact assessment associated with the construction and operation of Africa’s largest desalination plant at Hamma in Algeria.

Metoc undertook the study in two phases. The first phase, an initial review, determined relevant international and local governing standards associated with the new construction and hypersaline coastal discharge from the operation. These standards covered the environmental, economic and cultural issues.

The second phase comprised a detailed environmental impact assessment, and considered the potential effects of the desalination plant on the ecology, water resources, air quality, climate, cultural heritage, archaeology, land use, visual obstruction and social economics together with investigation into the potential for hypersaline recirculation between the plant outfall and the seawater intake.

“Metoc has worked very closely with the major oil and gas companies in Algeria over a number of years and the desalination contract allowed the company’s extensive environmental skills and knowledge of the region to be diversified into a new industrial sector,” Colin Gibbs, business development manager at Metoc plc

Metoc provides support to the water, energy, marine cable and renewables industry sectors on environmental and related regulatory issues. Services include: research, planning, risk management, contract negotiations, data gathering and site supervision, as well as predictive modelling, and environmental optimisation.

Clients of Metoc include asset owners and operators, their engineering consultants and contractors. The company defines and advises on the specific options and opportunities for senior management and engineers to enable project teams to protect assets and optimise their productive use and performance within the environmental context, whilst achieving full legislative compliance and minimising related risks and costs.
