"If you've ever gone off on your kid's soccer coach or coveted your neighbor's Jamaican spring break vacation, then this book's for you," says author Dave Goetz, who lives in Wheaton, Ill., a Chicago suburb.

The book identifies 8 toxins that pollute suburban life and corrode the human soul. Goetz also identifies 8 corresponding spiritual practices to mitigate the toxins and live what he calls "the thicker life."

One of Goetz's toxins, for example, is "I want my neighbor's life." Goetz says there's a hyper vigilance in the suburbs on your neighbor's life. In his blog on www.deathbysuburb.net, he writes, "I see my neighbor’s bigger house and better vacations and better golden retriever, and conclude his life might be richer and more fulfilling than mine."

Death by Suburb is a spiritual geography of the suburbs. Goetz integrates key spiritual practices from the three Christian traditions: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant. Franciscan Richard Rohr, author of "Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer," writes, “’Death by Suburb’ ... addresses and overcomes the split in our religion, our lifestyles, and even our consciousness."

Leigh Schmidt, professor of religion at Princeton University writes, "With a compassion born of his own experiences of suburban unreality and dysfunction, Goetz effectively evokes a thicker sense of our social and religious worlds."

Goetz is a former editor of Leadership Journal, the leading periodical for pastors, and a former pastor. He writes for “Christianity Today” and was the general editor for the Pastor's Soul series. To contact the author, subscribe to his blog, or for more information, visit www.deathbysuburb.net.
