Fate Meets Chance and Divine Design: New Book Looks at Chemical Dependency From a Nurse’s Witty Perspective

(Omaha, NE) Joyce Dunn knows chemical dependency is a growing problem in America. She knows it inside and out after 13 years as a Registered Nurse specializing in chemical dependency treatment. Moreover, she knows a chemical dependency treatment unit can be a pretty amusing place.

Omaha, NE (PRWEB) January 28, 2006 -- With respect and humor, Dunn shares her knowledge and experience in her new book Fate, Chance or Divine Design.

According to Dunn, “The book started out as a joke with a co-worker. We were laughing about the antics of one of our patients. I jokingly said ‘I should write a book and call it ATC Truck Farm: Fruits, Nuts & Vegetable I’ve Known & Loved.’ ATC is short for Alcohol Treatment Center. I was being flippant at the time. I never really considered writing and of course never took any notes. But the idea kept popping up in my head, so I decided I’d start writing to see how much I could remember.”

The book takes the form of short vignettes of patients and professionals. “I intended to focus on the patients,” Dunn continued, “but the nurses and other professionals were just as intriguing. As I thought about other people who made the unit what it was, I realized it would appeal to a larger audience, not just medical professionals. I dropped the ATC title as the book developed. Although many of the stories are humorous, the book is serious overall. It’s really for anyone who has battled alcohol or chemical dependency, or is close to someone who has, or a professional working in the field—especially those working in mental health whose understanding of chemical dependency may not be totally accurate.”

Dunn is a native of Nebraska. She lives in Omaha, where she has operated Healing Journeys, a therapeutic Swedish massage business, since 1992. Swedish massage is a gentle full-body massage technique. The benefits include improved circulation, enhancements to and maintenance of chiropractic adjustments, and general feelings of relaxation and well being. Dunn worked as an RN for 20 years, 13 of those in chemical dependency treatment.

Dunn and her husband of 46 years are parents of three grown boys.
Fate, Chance or Divine Design joins two other titles written by and available from Dunn: Healing Journeys #1 and Healing Journeys #2. Both are 30-minute relaxation audiotapes with background music by Chuck Pennington of Manneheim Steamroller under the voice of the author.
