Keeping thousands of security personnel expertly trained and certified requires up-to-the-minute personalized training that catapults past the inefficiencies of conventional classroom teaching. Initial Security, a leader in the North American physical security sector, today announces the launch of Initial Online Academy, a state-of-the-art Web-based training program.

Initial Online Academy is available for the company’s employees including security personnel, first line and mid-level supervisors, field managers, site managers and executive staff. Pre-and-post tests actively measure students’ retention on each course. To date, students enrolled in Initial Online Academy have increased their scores over 23% from pre-test to post-test grades. Offering content delivery consistency, every officer nationwide is trained uniformly while allowing for regional variances. An electronic audit trail allows managers to measure the progress of each student.

“Our staff is our most valuable and vital resource and the training needs of our employees across the United States are our top priority,” said Randal Dorn, President and CEO for Initial Security’s U.S. operations. “E-learning has been proven to increase long-term retention of key information versus conventional classroom teaching and video-based training.”

Experts agree that simulations boost learning retention rates dramatically. A study conducted by the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Sciences in Alexandria, Va., found that on average, students retain 5 percent of what they hear in lectures, 10 percent of what they read, and 20 percent of what they see and hear in audiovisual presentations. But add "practice by doing" and "teach others/immediate use" to the mix—two learning techniques that computerized simulations that Initial Online Academy features—and retention rates shoot up to 75 and 80 percent, respectively.

“Initial Online Academy’s Web-based training puts the student in control of the learning process allowing for extremely high retention rates,” says Timothy J. Freesmeyer, founder and president, Etico Solutions, Inc., the company that developed the program. “Going light-years beyond traditional text on a Web page, our E-learning programs are enlightening, enjoyable and engaging.”

Initial Online Academy’s Web-based training offers a continual variety of new courses as well as refresher training. These E-learning initiatives can be completed by the officer on duty or anytime Web access is available. “Our employees appreciate the flexibility of working the training around their busy schedules,” said Leonard Courtright, Regional Vice President for Initial Security’s Southwest region based in Houston, Texas.

“A key security requirement voiced by our clients is the need for consistency across geographic areas and at all levels of staff,” adds Courtright. “Our E-learning program ensures that all Initial Security personnel are properly and uniformly trained enabling us to deliver consistent security operations at multiple client operations.”

“Initial Security’s E-learning program also serves as a screening tool that identifies applicants without the basic computer skills they’ll need on the job as well as highlights academic strength and weakness areas,” adds Courtright. “We’re able to identify trends within groups of employees at particular sites who warrant additional training efforts.”

“Initial Online Academy is student-driven so officers and other employees who have an easier time grasping new concepts can move forward and challenge themselves with additional course material instead of waiting for others to ‘catch up,’” says Courtright. “Officers who need additional time to fully understand a learning module can work at their pace, review and, if necessary, re-review the course module, until they’ve mastered the material. Consistent with Initial Security’s approach to continuous service improvement, the Initial Online Academy contains a student evaluation for each learning module. Employees provide comments regarding the content, information delivery and process of the training.”

“Our E-learning system allows for quick deployment of new information to security personnel based on new policies and procedures implemented by the company,” adds Dorn.
