SAN JOSE, CA (PRWEB) February 1, 2006
Cinequest, Northern California’s premiere film institute, continues to redefine the very concept of film festival, culminating in a 16th event which goes beyond the traditional festival format of films in theatres by delivering content worldwide via secure Internet download, Cinequest DVD label, and now mobile platforms such as the Palm® Treo™ 650 smartphone (Nasdaq: PALM), Apple® iPod® (Nasdaq: AAPL), and video-capable mobile phones. The utilization of new technologies is a strength of Cinequest allowing the fest to expand to be not only worldwide but also year-round. If you are looking for the future of film, you will find it at Cinequest.
Getting films to film fans using both traditional and non-traditional methods is a keystone of Cinequest’s mission. While other festivals have claimed to be the first, Cinequest was the premiere festival to deliver free feature-length films in DVD quality through the Internet and in completely secure format. Last year http://www.cinequestonline.org delivered 125,000 secure downloads of films to fans around the world, and for 2006, the number of projected viewings is on track to be over 400,000. Continuing to be ahead of the curve, Cinequest this year will debut festival content on mobile video platforms such as Palm® hand held devices, iPods®, wireless laptops and any mobile phone with video capabilities despite an individual’s service provider.
This year through Cinequest’s Viewer’s Voice competition on Cinequest Online, more than 40 feature films and 300 short films competed for the last eight slots in the festival lineup. This contest empowers a vast worldwide audience to choose the winning films. Final winners of the Viewer’s Voice competition will be announced on February 28, 2006.
A collection of over 191 feature and short films make up Cinequest’s 16th film festival, the centerpiece of the institute. Each year the quality of the film program increases along with an ever-growing list of premiere feature films. This year’s feature lineup consists of 21 world, 14 North American and four United States premieres. At the heart of the festival are Cinequest’s venues, all within three blocks of each other and all technologically state-of-the-art; plush and opulent in terms of patron experience. Using the integrated powers of Cinequest Film Festival, Cinequest Online and the Cinequest DVD label, Cinequest discovers new and emerging independent and international films and artists.
Cinequest launched its own DVD label last September, presenting feature films chosen from the Cinequest lineup and making them available to fans worldwide through a new model of distribution that combines DVD releasing as well as online delivery of certain titles via Cinequest Online (http://www.cinequestonline.org) and a partnership with Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX). This model is a new solution to distribute the truly independent film that doesn’t fit into the traditional model of studio films or quasi-independent films cast with movie stars.
Cinequest empowers and inspires with movie-making forums that combine the how-to of film-making with the latest technologies. This year the Day of forums will focus on five critical aspects of the movie-making process. The forums include the Day of the Writer, Day of the Producer, Day of the Cinematographer, Day of Post and Day of Distribution. Each of these forums will present experts in their field to inspire, educate and fascinate both filmmakers and film fans. Presentations will include a live brainstorming workshop between an established Hollywood producer and experts from Palm® to solve problems of taking product from the large screen to a mobile platform. Others will demonstrate how new technologies effect a variety of areas in the movie-making process and how smart filmmakers are utilizing the latest tools. The breadth of the forums is quite large this year, so we recommend seeing the separate press release Cinequest Forums to help dissect this dynamic lineup of heavyweight guests and ahead-of-the-curve presentations.
Cinequest continues its goal to provide the best customer experience possible. One of the most dynamic changes at the festival this year is behind the scenes in the projection booth. Instead of using multiple decks to accommodate the many digital formats, Cinequest is switching over to an Omneon server system which completely enhances the viewing experience. The Omneon servers allow the projectionist to preset and control various aspects of digital formats. This provides higher technical standards for film presentations and will help facilitate on-time screenings. During the past year, Cinequest also upgraded its in-house ticketing system to provide faster service, and again, no service charge is added to tickets. Starting February 1, 2006, tickets will be sold online at http://www.cinequest.org, on the phone at (408) 295-FEST (3378).
