Radio Again announces first-ever release of radio recordings by legendary humorist Jean Shepherd, author of A Christmas Story.

The classic radio work of humorist and monologist Jean Shepherd is now available with the release of two new digitally remastered audio CD collections from Radio Again; Jean Shepherd: The X Random Factor (8 performances on 8 audio CDs), and Jean Shepherd: Don’t Be A Leaf (4 performances on 4 audio CDs).

Best known today as the creator and narrator of A Christmas Story, the holiday movie favorite about a boy’s quest for a Red Ryder BB gun, Jean Shepherd founded his career on the radio and was one of the greatest raconteurs in its entire history. Shepherd’s radio work culminated during the period of 1955-1977 when he was heard most days on WOR radio in New York, a clear-channel station heard along the Eastern seaboard and points west.

The radio programs in these collections, long lost and forgotten until rediscovered during a warehouse inventory, were created in the mid 1960’s by Shepherd for radio and television syndicator Hartwest Productions in the format heard on Shepherd’s WOR shows of the day, right down to his familiar theme music.

These are vintage Jean Shepherd radio performances and include what many will fondly recall as the mainstay elements of his brilliant radio work, combining humor, story telling, kazoo playing, and general philosophizing on everyday life and the nature of man. Listeners will learn of the flaw in the best-laid master plans, discover that there are 9 to 5 odds against everything in life, and hear stories and musings on being yanked into the world, the quicksand myth, being left behind by the world around you, shopping for cars with the old man, fly swatters, growing up as a Chicago White Sox fan and much more.

Shepherd’s radio work was fervently followed and influential to many who heard it. He was both a unique and transitional figure in the development of today’s talk radio. Shepherd could talk, and talk he did, touching his listeners intimately as if speaking to an audience of one.
