If made of solid bronze, the new five-foot-diameter seal for the National Transportation & Safety Board would have weighed more than 1,000 pounds and cost tax-payers tens of thousands of dollars to reinforce the building’s walls to carry the load. But, Smart Design of Woodbridge, Va., used the patented metallizing process by LuminOre Inc. to give the NTSB seal the look and feel of solid bronze, and to reduce the seal’s weight down to a mere 90 pounds.
Unveiling this week at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Va., the five-foot-diameter organizational seal not only honors the department’s commitment to transportation safety, but it also stands as a testament to innovative design and high-tech solutions. Instead of casting the piece of solid bronze, Smart Design crafted the seal from high-density urethane foam and then coated it with LuminOre® Bronze, a cold-sprayable metal that provides the look and feel of solid metal. The end result was a magnificent, five-foot-diameter bronze seal that weighed only 90 pounds.
“LuminOre is a patented cold metallizing process that seamlessly applies cold sprayable metal to almost any surface, giving almost any substrate the appearance of being a solid cast metal object without the weight,” explains Tom Valente, president of LuminOre and founder of the LuminOre metallizing process. “The NTSB seal would have weighed more than 1000 pounds if crafted from old, traditional means, but LuminOre sprayable metals allow fabricators such as Smart Design to create exciting new design options with metals such as stainless steel, copper, bronze, aluminum and many others at a fraction of the weight and expense.”
Located in the Washington, DC metro area, Smart Design Inc. is a dimensional design fabricator utilizing cutting-edge CNC-milling technology, creativ finishing, high-quality materials combined with time-honored craftsmanship. Smart Design is well-known for delivering the highest standards in custom dimensional design and for routinely turning out complex millwork with artistic-like precision.
“Whether it’s a distinctive dimensional sign, museum exhibit or office interior, we can achieve magnificent results even on small budgets through our innovative approaches and durable, cost-effective selection of materials, such as LuminOre,” says Shelly McMahan president of Smart Design, a company that has created many metal products that would be too impractical and expensive to produce by traditional casting or forging. “I love working with it, and I’m continually fascinated by our results.”
