Red Bank, NJ (PRWEB) February 9, 2006 -- The renowned Jamaican musical group, “Fr. Ho Lung and Friends” of the Missionaries of the Poor today announced that the award-winning Caribbean musical “Jesus 2000,” is scheduled for two performances only at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, February 25th and 26th.
The play, originally performed at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica, won “Best Production” honors at the prestigious Actor Boy Awards in Jamaica. Written by the Very Reverend Fr. Richard Ho Lung, founder of the Missionaries of the Poor, “Jesus 2000” has toured successfully in the Caribbean, Canada, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey.
Last performed in New Jersey in 2004, Jesus 2000 is part of the Trenton Diocese’s year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary.
“We are delighted and proud to return to New Jersey with ‘Jesus 2000’,” said Fr. Brian Kerr, a founding member of the Missionaries of the Poor. “This is family entertainment of the highest caliber, with an impact that reaches every one in the audience. Wherever ‘Jesus 2000’ has performed, communities, parishes, Christian and non-Christian, parents and students, have all expressed to us how they have been transformed by the music, drama and the vision of Christ’s universal message of love, forgiveness, redemption and mercy.
More than 40 members of the non-denominational group of highly talented singers, dancers and musicians from Jamaica and throughout the New York-New Jersey area have volunteered to lend their support to the music and mission of Fr. Ho Lung. Founded in 1981 by Fr. Ho Lung, the Missionaries of the Poor opened their first shelter in the most dehumanizing slums of Kingston, Jamaica, and have subsequently expanded with other shelters built to serve the homeless, poor, mentally and physically challenged, children, the elderly, victims of leprosy and AIDS, the abandoned and outcast in Haiti, Philippines, Uganda and India. Today, brothers and priests operate in five missions worldwide to faithfully dedicate their lives each day in service to the homeless destitute, and outreach to thousands of poor families and children.
The Missionaries of the Poor has been elevated to religious institute status by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, making the organization the first and only male religious community founded in the English speaking Caribbean to attain this status.
