(PRWEB) February 12, 2006 -- Cub Packs and Scout Troops from all over Macomb County converged at Camp Holaka near Lapeer, Michigan the weekend of January 13, 14 and 15th to compete in the Avalanche Antics. The Camporee is the premier winter event for the Ojibwa District with over 340 partipants.

Saturday was the main day of the competition. Scouts tromped though the fresh snow with homemade Klondike sleds and supplies to compete in various Scout skills. In one competition the Scouts had to conduct first aid and transport a victim up a steep slope on a stretcher made with what ever material the boys had on hand. In another competition Scouts tested their skills in a Native American game called “snow snakes”. Boys created long, snake like poles and some painted and decorated their snake, the idea was to slide the snake along the snow for distance. Based on the tracks in the snow, some snakes went up to 40 yards or more. It wasn’t all skills tests. One of the favorite stations for both Cubs and Scouts was the Abominable Snowman shoot. Over 2,500 shots of “puppy chow” where fired by over 200 boys armed with small sling shots. The main target was the Abominable Snowman from the famous 1964 Christmas Show “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.”

The competition wound down in the afternoon after a hearty lunch in the main mess hall of Sloppy Joes, chips, and veggies washed down with hot chocolate. The sun finally made its appearance just in time during the final announcements of results and the striking of the colors.

The event could not be possiible without all the volunteers. The Order of the Arrow, Parents and Scouters had a blast, and got a patch of their own, for making the event a success.
