(PRWEB) February 20, 2006 -- The Law Office of Grant M. Scheiner, P.C. recently hired Matt Skillern, a trial lawyer, to aid in the defenses of people in the Houston area who have been charged with misdemeanors and felonies. The firm is exceptionally knowledgeable of the ever-changing Texas state driving while intoxicated (DWI) and driving under the influence (DUI) laws.
Grant M. Scheiner opened his private practice in 1995 and has practiced law in Houston, Texas since earning his law degree in 1992 from the renowned University of Houston Law Center. The Law Office of Grant M. Scheiner, P.C. offers full-service criminal representation for adults, juveniles and businesses in the state and federal court systems.
Defense Against DWI and DUI - In recent years, DWI and DUI laws have become much more stringent. Many people have little knowledge of what is at stake when they are charged with one of these offenses. The Law Office of Grant M. Scheiner, P.C. devotes much of its time to educating the public in the details of DWI and DUI laws. Mr. Scheiner is a board certified criminal law specialist. He is board certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Mr. Scheiner is also a trained practitioner and instructor of standardized field sobriety testing. He is a frequent lecturer on DWI and criminal law topics and is an annual co-director of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association’s (TCDLA) “Top Gun DWI” defense seminar. The Top Gun seminar features the nation’s most renowned DWI and DUI defenders, including Mr. Scheiner. Mr. Scheiner’s recent article “Attacking the DWI Video,” was the cover story for Voice for the Defense, a publication of the TCDLA.
Mr. Scheiner currently serves on the board of directors of the TCDLA and is a Lifetime Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a former board member of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association (HCCLA) and has been named as the organization’s “Outstanding Member.” Mr. Scheiner also serves on the Technology Committee of the State Bar of Texas and has lectured fellow attorneys on the effective use of technology in the courtroom.
According to Mr. Scheiner, “The most common mistake that someone accused of DWI makes is assuming the case cannot be won. An experienced lawyer can win your case in a number of ways by utilizing defenses, ranging from suppressing police evidence gathered in violation of your rights to questioning the accuracy of breath or field sobriety tests.”
Newest DWI Law - The Law Office of Grant M. Scheiner, P.C. takes pride in its knowledge of the constantly changing Texas DWI Laws. Mr. Scheiner has lectured fellow attorneys on changes and updates in Texas DWI law. One of the most recent DWI laws passed in Texas gives the Texas Department of Public Safety the right to assess an annual surcharge for three years on anyone who has been found guilty of a DWI. The cost of the surcharge depends upon the person’s previous DWI record. If he or she has no DWI convictions in the 36 months prior to this conviction, the cost is $1,000 per year. The amount is raised to $1,500 if there has been a DWI conviction in the past three years. If during the trial it is proved that the person had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16 (which is twice the legal limit in Texas) or higher, the surcharge is elevated to $2,000 per year.
