On March 1, 2006, new online science fiction and fantasy magazine Jim Baen's Universe rolls out electronic Advanced Reader Copies for members of the Universe Club. Club members get to read stories from award winning authors three months prior to publication.

Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) February 28, 2006 -- Advanced Reader Copies, those unproofed bound copies that used to be called galley proofs, sell for hot prices on eBay. Jim Baen, the legendary science fiction and fantasy publisher, has been selling electronic Advanced Reader Copies of his new fiction offerings through his Webscriptions service for over a year.

Using the same idea, members of the Jim Baen’s Universe readers’ club, the Universe Club, will be receiving electronic advanced reader copies (eARCs) of the first issue (June 2006) of the magazine beginning March 1st. The eARC version will be essentially the same as the magazine, but three months early, and with some unproofed stories. Each issue will be preceded by an eARC.

The Universe Club is a members-only readers club for Jim Baen’s Universe, with several levels of membership, Titan, Saturn, Polaris, and Andromeda. Depending on the membership level, club members are entitled to benefits ranging from the eARC to huge ebook packages from Webscriptions.net, to being “tuckerized” in an upcoming story by a Baen’s Universe author.

Tuckerization is named after famed sci-fi author Wilson Tucker, who used his friends’ names, and sometimes their personalities in his fiction. Tuckerization is similar to being “redshirted” or killed off by name in a story. Redshirting dates to the original Star Trek television series, where it was noticed that the member of the team that beamed down to the surface who was wearing the red uniform blouse was usually the one that got killed.

Universe Club members will also be invited to meet-and-greets with prominent authors, and have special privileges at science fiction conventions, as well as a package of “swag” that includes products from the Baen’s Universe Store at Cafepress.com (http://www.cafepress.com/baenuniverse).

“The value add for the Universe Club member is enormous,” says Jim Baen’s Universe editor Eric Flint. “Just the value of the ebooks in the Webscriptions bundle is more than the entire price of the club membership—and you get the magazine subscription too!”

The Universe Club can be joined online at http://www.baensuniverse.com.
