The Red Imported Fire Ant is an aggressive and venomous pest that has been causing tremendous economic damage to the Southern United States. In Texas alone, over $1.2 billion dollars of damage has been done to crops, parks, schools, electrical wires, cable and telephone wires, sprinkler systems, and anything else in the path of the Fire Ant. To date, strategies to stop the Fire Ant from damaging property have been ineffective. That was until ARINIX™ was invented.
Nix of America, a plastics and industrial products company in San Jose, has developed an innovative plastic called ARINIX™ that is embedded with a slow-release pesticide that Fire Ants hate. When ARNINX™ is placed by a Fire Ant colony, the colony abandons their nest.
One of the places where Fire Ants cause the most damage is in outdoor utility boxes (electrical, cable TV, and telephone). Fire Ants are attracted to the electrical hum and warmth found in utility boxes. The damage is caused by Fire Ants nesting in the utility boxes and corroding the wires by bringing dirt and moisture into the utility box. ARINIX™ has demonstrated itself to be an ideal solution for ridding utility boxes of Fire Ants and keeping the ants out for three to five years.
According to Dr. Bastiaan M. Drees, one of the world’s leading Fire Ant authorities and a Professor of Entomology at Texas A&M University, "ARINIX™ is a huge step forward for protection in commercial industry segments. Prior to this product’s development, chemically-based treatments could not provide more than a year’s protection. ARINIX™ provides up to 5- years of protection in a single application."
Applying ARINIX™ is very simple. All that needs to be done is to take an ARINIX™ strip and wrap it around the base of a utility box or other type of property you wish to protect from Fire Ants. ARINIX™ has also been shown to protect against spider infestations.
Gene Ozawa, President of Nix of America, states, "We’re just beginning to look at new uses for ARINIX™. Dealing with fire ants is just one of many uses for ARINIX™. The applications go on and on."
ARINIX™ comes in the form of several shaped plastic strips, (grommet, flat, L-shaped or spiral shape) which can be placed on or along access points to utility box or other type of property or wrapped around wires, pipes or around the base of a tree or doorway.
