Tampa, FL (PRWEB) February 23, 2006
Analysts at http://www.BestDietForMe.com, the #4 traffic diet website on the Internet, operated by the market research firm Marketdata Enterprises, reveal three key diet market trends for 2006. BestDietForMe.com provides an online, computerized diet plan “matching service” for consumers. It is also one of the leading weight loss information portals.
U.S. Weight Loss Market Forecasts
1) Diet Food Home Delivery Services Will Grow Strongly…
“These services are becoming more popular. Corroborating this trend, interest in diet food home delivery rose to its highest point in the BestDietForMe.com survey—6.1% of dieters by the 3rd quarter of 2005. Diet food home delivery eliminates some traditional obstacles that diet centers have faced--no driving to weekly meetings or to pick up your diet food. Dieters order anonymously, online, 24/7. Apparently, that’s a service that’s in demand.”, according to John LaRosa, Research Director.
Consumers basically have three food choices: frozen, shelf stable, or fresh. Some plans ship only to large cities on the East/West Coasts (NY, LA), while others ship nationwide. Some delivery services ship food weekly or monthly, others ship fresh food daily. The latter is the most expensive—$1,000-$1,200 per month. Services cost $10/day to $36.95. The key to NutriSystem’s success may well lie in its price, since they are on the low end of the scale. Dieters are very price conscious.
NutriSystem has grown rapidly since 2004—from $50 million to $212 million in 2005. What this diet company is selling is convenience. They’ll deliver 5 weeks of diet food to your door for $280. Other competitors include: Atkins At Home, Diet To Your Door, Jenny Direct, HMR At Home, Diet To Go, Sunfare, and Zone Chefs. More will surely come on the scene. In fact, eDiets.com entered the market in January with a national chef-prepared fresh food delivery service.
2) Diet Phone Consulting Services Are Emerging…
Providing weight loss consulting by phone is a relatively new phenomenon. However, BestDietForMe.com analysts predict that more companies will enter this field, and that the quality of this weight loss phone support will improve.
The psychological factors affecting weight loss are crucial. BestDietForMe.com analysts have found, from analyzing responses of 54,566 dieters completing our online survey from Jan. to Sept. 2005, that:
- at least 45% of dieters need “social eating skills” support (strategies for eating out in restaurants, handling saboteurs),
- 50% require “stimulus control” (managing eating triggers and high-risk situations, portion control), and
- 70% need to address “emotional eating” (help with stress management and binge eating).
Studies prove that phone support works. Consumer Reports (June 2005) said that: "...Of all the diet strategies, personal support is the most successful. In a 2002 survey, the dieters who worked one-on-one with a "counselor" said it was second in effectiveness only to devising their own personal diet and exercise plan."
However, quality diet phone consulting programs open to the public are in the minority in America. You usually have to belong to a particular HMO or purchase costly company diet foods to gain access to phone consultants. One exception is a new program called Trimtalk.com. They recruit higher-quality phone consultants with a personal weight loss history, who have backgrounds in nutrition, exercise, or counseling. This is a rare skill set.
3) Diet Books Will Be Hot, Publishers Releasing More Titles…
BestDietForMe.com analysts predict that more celebrities (and diet doctors) will jump on the weight loss bandwagon in 2006. Recent hot-selling diet books include: French Women Don’t Get Fat, The 3-Hour Diet, and Volumetrics. New entries include: The Flavor Point Diet and The Perricone Weight Loss Diet, and The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution (by relationship expert John Gray). Fitness guru Denise Austin just released her first diet book: Eat Carbs, Lose Weight. Even eDiets.com is planning to release a new diet book in a deal with TIME.
