March Break Signals Warning of Head Lice
With the cold weather and March break team up to mean an outbrak of headlice. These simple tips can help you avoid turning your break into frustration and missed school the following week.
(PRWEB) February 25, 2006 --With the cold weather and March break just around the corner, another outbreak of head lice is sure to hit. Head lice tend to escalate after children return to school from March break holidays.
The reason for this is two fold. First, families’ holiday in other countries during the March break and children are often put into different care setting so parents can continue to work. This allows for a variety of head to head or head to item contacts that usually would not occur. Visiting relatives, new playmates, and different sleep settings all mean more contact and a greater change of picking up head lice. Second, during the colder months, coats, hats and other apparel are often hung together on coat racks or put into piles. Lice transfer from head to head by crawling so when these items are placed together it is easy for hungry head lice to make their way from one person’s cloths to another and then to a head.
With this knowledge comes the power to know what to do, and what not to do to avoid getting head lice. Take extra time to check your children before returning after March break. Continue to check them for at least two weeks. Other tips are to send your child to school with a bag to place outer wear in before hanging them on the coat rack. Put long hair up or wear a hat. Talk with your kids about how to avoid getting lice and, most important, notify the school or care setting if you find lice and DO NOT send your child to school until it is gone.
Another option is to hire a professional agency to screen for lice or to train up a committee of parent or teacher volunteers to do it.
