Blade Server Solutions: Cabinet Level Power Distribution Solutions for High Density Cabinets
Reno, NV (PRWEB) February 28, 2006
Server Technology is pleased to announce the release of a new white paper , “Blade Server Solutions: Cabinet Level Power Distribution Solutions for High Density Cabinets”, that addresses the challenges of powering today’s high density cabinets, blade server and server clusters in the data center utilizing Cabinet Power Distribution Units (CDU’s). This paper explores data centers management top concerns, future power trends within the data center, blade servers, and an in depth discussion of the different power solution options and their advantages and disadvantages. Power selection and distribution for high density cabinets, with the required power sometimes pushing 40 kW’s or higher per cabinet, requires new and innovative solutions. These new demands require special attention be paid to 3-Phase power at the cabinet level as it delivers the increased power that data centers now demand. 208 V power and three phase 208 V power input choices with input currents of 20A, 30 A and 60 A are discussed.
Advanced planning and proper power selection at the cabinet level determines the number of drops that must be run per cabinet which in turn effects the overall cost of the installation. These choices are carried through the whole design as the type and amount of power run to the cabinet also determines the CDU that is installed, the number of CDU’s required and whether future expansion within the cabinet is allowed.
Additionally, other CDU features are also discussed such as receptacle control, current metering, and redundancy for mission critical applications. These features are important for installation and management of the installed devices in the cabinet as well as the overall functionality.
This white paper will be presented at the Server Blade Summit 2006 in Garden Grove, CA April 18th – 20th. You can visit Server Technology Inc. there at Booth # 301. It is also available at http://www.servertech.com at http://www.servertech.com/support/WhitePapers/.
These CDU’s are the first family of cabinet-level power distribution units to provide 30-amp power distribution (110V, 208V or 208 V 3-Phase) directly to the equipment cabinet while providing Branch Circuit Protection within the CDU. They are also the first power distribution units to meet the stringent requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 60950-1, which is now required of all new 30-amp rack-level PDUs.
