New help for employees: How to identify and deal with control freaks in the workplace.

Anna Johnson, author of the controversial, soon-to-be-released employee management book, How To Manage People (Even If You’re A Control Freak!) (ISBN 0-9775175-0-0) is conducting a study to help employees discover whether or not their manager is a control freak.

Part fun, part enlightening, anyone can participate in the study, “Is Your Boss A Control Freak?” by filling in the survey at The survey helps employees identify why they may be having difficulties with their boss and what to do about it if they are.

According to Ms Johnson, many managers are control freaks – people with a fundamental need to control what they do and what happens to them – which often creates problems for both them and their staff.

“In many companies, the most ambitious, perfectionist, independent high-achievers are promoted to management positions,” said Ms Johnson. “So too in small business, where you need similar qualities to succeed. Is it any surprise that these managers and small business owners are control freaks?”

Unfortunately, control freak managers often end up micromanaging, not delegating enough, and not getting things done, because they can’t trust anyone else with the work. Inevitably, such poor leadership leads to low employee motivation, poor performance and even conflict in the workplace.

Yet the problem is not always picked up by Human Resources nor solved by sending the boss on management training. Consequently, people who work for control freak bosses need effective strategies for “managing” their boss.

“Once you know whether or not your manager is a control freak, you can deal with him or her on that basis,” said Ms Johnson. “You’ll have more realistic expectations about your boss and not automatically feel that every problem is because of you.”
