Rabbi Myron Rakowitz to speak on the ‘History of the New York Turkish-Cuban Sephardic Community.’ On this evening, guests will learn about the Sephardic community in Canarsie that was made up of Turks, Greeks, and Cuban Jews—many originally from Syria.

(PRWEB) February 27, 2006 -- Rabbi Myron Rakowitz to speak on the ‘History of the New York Turkish-Cuban Sephardic Community’ on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 in Brooklyn, New York.

Rabbi Rakowitz has served as spiritual leader of the Sephardic Jewish Center of Canarsie for over 25 years. On this evening, guests will learn about the Sephardic community in Canarsie that was made up of Turks, Greeks, and Cuban Jews—many originally from Syria. You will also learn about the community of Sephardim that was in Bensonhurst, NY. Come hear one of the respected rabbis that has served the Sephardic community for over a quarter of a century.

The event is sponsored by Mahazike Tora of New York and the International Sephardic Leadership Council. Mahazike Tora is a program for Turkish Jews in the New York area, as well as others who would like to learn about Jewish traditions and culture of the Jews from the former Ottoman Empire.

In addition to guest speakers and special events, Mahazike Tora offers Kabbalat Shabbat in the Turkish tradition, each Friday evening in Brooklyn, NY. Guests are welcome, and lodging can be provided at no charge. Mahazike Tora strives to educate and provide information for Jews who are descendant from Turkey, Rhodes, the Balkans and others former Ottoman territories.

Come, make new friends! The event will be held at the Sephardic Institute Synagogue which is located at 511 Ave. R in Brooklyn, New York 11223. The building is located on the corner of Avenue R & Kings Highway. The program will start at 8pm, please arrive a few minutes early. Kosher refreshments will be served; there is no charge for this event.
