MoleSense™, a device with software, measures and records the size of moles on the skin. The software automatically detects the border of moles and measures their size.

Developed by Opticom Data Research, MoleSense is intended for people who have multiple moles (perhaps hundreds) and who need to monitor their size. The MoleSense product includes hardware (a camera rail and an optional remote switch) and software (for image acquisition and analysis).

Using any digital camera along with the MoleSense hardware and software, a person can take pictures of moles from which the software can measure and record the size of the moles.

New features in version 2.0, released last week: The software automatically detects and draws the border of moles and measures the maximum length of each mole (the length between the two most distant points on the border of a mole).

MoleSense can be used as a part of a mole mapping procedure, in which the size and location of moles over the entire body are mapped. A report that includes the image of moles (with a ruler plotted on the image) and information about the image settings can be printed with a click of a mouse.

How it works: following a calibration process, the software “learns” the field of view of the camera. The software can then measure the size of moles in images of the skin, draw rulers on images, and more.

A free demo version of the MoleSense software is available at http://www.MoleSense.com.

MoleSense comes with an extensive online Help system that includes step-by-step instructions for using MoleSense, instructions for mounting a camera on the rail and for connecting the remote switch, a tutorial, and explanations of all the features of MoleSense.

MoleSense price: $54.95 CND (about $46.95 US).

Package includes: camera rail/handle, remote switch (optional), software CD, and a quick start guide.
