Sewall Menzel, a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff and War Colleges, offers a critical analysis of America’s Vietnam War experience. As part of his first-hand account of five major campaigns with which he was associated, the author points out key mistakes made by the United States which not only enhanced the just cause of the Viet Cong guerrilla insurgency but also contributed to its meteoric expansion - key mistakes which the United States essentially found itself repeating during the current war in Iraq.
Menzel mixes the intricate details of his wartime experiences with a broad sweeping reflection on the course of the war from its 1950s origins to its bitter end in mid-1975. Specifically, his campaigns found him at the captain-level in the infantry with the 101st Airborne in the Tet battles of 1968, commanding a reconnaissance troop in combat with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Cambodia, serving as a local militia advisor in the south-central highlands while fighting the Viet Cong in Lam Dong Province, and then serving as an intelligence analyst in the Headquarters, Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV), where he tracked the decisive battle for the Laos-based Ho Chi Minh Trail. As the author brings us into battle with him, veterans, military personnel, and history buffs alike will delight in reading his account of the operations, tactics and strategy surrounding one of America’s most controversial wars.
