Bono Praises Brazil's Anti-AIDS Campaign

Bono, the lead singer of the multi-grammy winning rock band, U2, gives high praise to Brazil for its AIDS awareness work.

(PRWEB) March 10, 2006 -- In Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, the government has given information and a packet of condoms to U2 rock star Bono, who praised the country's anti-AIDS campaign. To learn more about AIDS worldwide, go to www.aids.com.

While having dinner with Culture Minister and pop star Gilberto Gil in Salvador, a coastal city some 750 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro, the star received the kit, the Health Ministry said Thursday. "Bono said he is involved in (anti-AIDS campaigns) like this, and has sought to learn more about the question of AIDS in Brazil," Gil said in a statement.

In Sao Paulo's Morumbi soccer stadium Monday and Tuesday nights, U2 played two sold-out concerts, and Bono is expected to spend Carnival in Salvador as a guest of Gil. Visit www.exploretalent.com. or www.exploretalent.us for more entertainment information.

During the Carnival, Brazil's Health Ministry plans to distribute 25 million condoms. The Carnival is a traditional period of wild partying and sexual abandon, that begins Friday night and ends -- theoretically -- on Ash Wednesday.

Brazil is Latin America's largest country with 185 million people. According to the most recent official figures, 371,827 cases of AIDS have been registered in Brazil between 1983, when the first case was reported, and June 2005.

An estimated 160,000 patients receive free AIDS drugs from the Brazilian government.
