Z-CoiL® Footwear Gains ANSI and CSA Certification

Steel-toe Pain Relief Footwear™ now available to workers on the job.

Now more workers are able to walk their factory and warehouse floors without pain, enjoying the springy support of their steel-toe Z-CoiL® Z-Walkers and Z-Duty Work Boots. These Z-CoiL® Pain Relief Footwear™ products have at last received the official certification for protective footwear that many companies require for their employees who work in hazardous environments.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) put Z-CoiL® steel-toe products through rigorous testing and inspected the footwear’s manufacturing process to see whether they met specific criteria for protective footwear set by both the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The Z-CoiL® footwear passed all tests with flying colors, and, in fact, exceeded the highest standards set by both the ANSI and CSA.

A certified UL seal along with the ANSI and CSA codes are now being stamped on the footwear boxes and inside the tongue of every shoe.

Although the steel-toe Z-Walkers and Z-Duty Work Boots have always met the criteria for ANSI and CSA certification, only products manufactured after the official approval date will be able to display the official stamp.

In addition to inspecting the footwear’s manufacturing process, UL performs two primary tests on steel-toe shoes: an impact test and a crush test. The impact test involves dropping a heavy steel tube from a certain height onto the toe, and measuring to see how far the steel toe compresses. This is intended to ensure that a person’s toes would be protected if the shoe were to be suddenly struck by a heavy object. For the crush test, a heavy weight is slowly added to the toe of the shoe until it collapses down to a certain point.

The revolutionary design of Z-CoiL® Pain Relief Footwear™ features a unique conical steel coil in the heel, which absorbs up to 50% of the impact from walking or running and delivers a 40 to 50% energy return. This coil-suspension system works in conjunction with a rigid, built-in orthotic that equalizes pressure distribution across the mid-foot, thereby reducing the pain of heel spurs or plantar fasciitis. Z-CoiL® shoes also feature thick cushioning under the forefoot and a permanent flex line at the ball of the foot, along with a rocker-bottom sole that gently assists each step. Such total foot support and cushioning work together to reduce the shock of impact to the body. And less impact means less pain.

Although most Z-CoiL® footwear proudly displays the signature heel coils, the steel-toe Z-Walker and Z-Duty Work Boot employ Enclosed Coil System™ heels for extra workplace safety—a dense foam heel covering designed to help keep cords and cables from catching on the coil.
