CPE is based upon Carbon Publish, DayPort’s flagship solution for video publishing and content management in use by well over 100 world-class websites of customers like Viacom and ClearChannel. Ideal for cable access stations, smaller stations and any video producer who wants to make its content available for web publication, CPE is an affordable solution that implements quickly and is easy to use. Should the needs of CPE users become more sophisticated, DayPort provides an upgrade path from CPE to Carbon Publish.
The CPE solution consists of three components: the Carbon Publish Element user interface, the Carbon Publish Element Cube (CPE3), a server that installs on the user’s network and the Carbon Publish Network (CPN), the DayPort network where content is published, hosted and managed. With CPE, users can get their video content to the web in just four simple steps:
1. Plug the video source into the Carbon Publish Element Cube (CPE3)
2. Record the video content to the cube
3. Transfer the resulting file to the DayPort Carbon Publish Network
4. Login to CPE via a web browser and begin publishing
“Serious video content producers and web site publishers know it’s all about the content,” says Andy Ioannou, SVP of Sales and Marketing for DayPort. “DayPort has a track record of serving the most demanding technical and content delivery specifications in the media convergence world with our Carbon Content Management solutions and products. We recognize that there is an entire class of video content producers that don’t need the breadth of functionality provided by the Carbon Publisher product platform, but still have a need to make their video accessible to a web audience. So we crafted a new solution based on elements of Carbon Publisher that put this capability within reach, both economically and from a resource perspective.”
Northwest Community Television, a leader in community access programming, has selected CPE to publish video content it produces on the web. Its Channel 12 service (http://www.twelve.tv) provides professionally-produced local news, sports and special events coverage for cable subscribers in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. With CPE, Channel 12 will expand the audience for the content it produces.
“Although video streaming as been around for some time, we had some skepticism about the maturity of the technology and held off adopting a solution,” said Mike Johnson, Manager and Assistant Executive Director at Channel 12. “We are glad we waited, because DayPort is providing us with a great solution. During our evaluation process, we looked at many different web sites that offered streaming video, but for one reason or another, their streaming did not work. Every DayPort-powered site we visited had a working stream and with great quality.”
Other factors that influenced Northwest Community Television to select the DayPort solution for Channel 12 were ease-of-use and cost. “The Carbon Publish Element solution arrived at the right place and the right time for us,” continued Johnson. “We were looking for a product that was very user friendly and not cost prohibitive. Carbon Publish Element provides us with a powerful streaming solution at a price point that is affordable. Because it is browser-based, Carbon Publish Element is extremely easy to use. Its support for Real Time Encoding and Automatic Transfer along with visual thumbnail capability makes our video content publishing a snap. With DayPort, we have a solution with an upgrade path that will grow with us.”
A number of CPE features support the ease of publishing and quality of delivery:
- Accessibility – use the CPE through any Internet connection
- Support for text and metadata - add text and metadata to video assets, essential for making video content search engine friendly, site search friendly, publishing the video in context, and providing for the interactivity that Internet visitors expect
