Families can now send off loved ones on an “Airway to Heaven.” New aerial cremation scattering service started by former advertising creative director.

Airway to Heaven, a new state-licensed premium aerial scattering service, has begun serving families and funeral homes in Southern California.

Dan Katz, nationally known for the creative advertising he developed for the funeral industry at his former ad agency, PKPF, founded the service. Katz, a pilot and now owner of the Hollywood Aviators flight school, says that he wanted to put his funeral expertise together with his love of flying and Airway to Heaven was born.

Airway to Heaven promises a higher level of professionalism, respect, responsiveness and creativity than other such services. “Before we launched, I spent a year looking at other cremation scattering providers and I knew that we had to be the exception,” says Katz. “For us, it’s about more than scattering the remains. It’s also about supporting the families and finding creative ways to memorialize the deceased. We want families to feel fulfilled and healed, and the process begins the moment we answer the phone.”

During his years creating funeral advertising, Katz was one of the first to recognize the fast-growing Baby Boomer market. Katz says that Boomers are seeking less traditional options as they deal with funerals and memorialization, including a greater number of choices with cremation and scattering.

Airway to Heaven service offers two basic programs for scattering. The first is unwitnessed flight that takes place within 10 days of the receipt of the remains. Scattering occurs off the beautiful Pacific coast near fabled Malibu, California. The second program allows the family to gather on the shore at a scheduled time to watch the plane circle and scatter the remains. Following the scattering, the plane releases a cloud of flower petals to signify that the scattering has been completed.

Although the company cannot take passengers along for a scattering flight, they will play pre-recorded prayers or music when the scattering begins. The family may also gather at the airport to watch the plane take off. With either program, the family receives a handsome certificate a few days later detailing the date, time, and place of scattering as a memorial keepsake.

Katz says Airway to Heaven will offer special industry pricing for funeral homes and crematories who may prefer to be recognized as the official providers of the cremation scattering as part of their “total service.”
