Dr. Beverly Kaye, an internationally recognized authority on career issues, will join a prestigious group of “pioneers and prophets” in workplace learning and performance who have been named to participate in the “Legends” series of the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) over the past few years.

As a “Legend” she will give a special lecture on developing careers and managing talent at ASTD’s 2006 Conference & Exposition in Dallas in May.

Previous “Legends” have included Ken Blanchard, Peter Block, Peter Senge, Gloria Gery, Margaret Wheatley, Elliott Masie, Jim and Dana Gaines Robinson, and Geary Rummler. In addition to Dr. Kaye, this year’s honorees are Bill Byham and David Cooperrider.

The criteria that Legends must meet to achieve this designation are: enduring impact and influence; originality of ideas; a career of sustained currency; work done more than five years ago is currently discussed, applied, and adapted; a substantive body of published work; and a contribution that raises the visibility, credibility and stature of the field. Dr. Kaye’s distinguished body of work over the past two decades amply meets all these criteria.

As founder and CEO of Career Systems International and a best selling author on workplace performance, Dr. Kaye has worked with a host of organizations to establish cutting-edge, award-winning career development solutions. In her first book, UP IS NOT THE ONLY WAY (Davies Black), a classic published in the early 80’s but still very relevant today, she foresaw the effects that leaner, flatter organizations would have on individual careers and the subsequent need for workers to take charge of their own careers. While she continues to be a strong proponent of individual career management, she also has developed systems for managers and employees to work together to help employees achieve their developmental goals.

With the publication of LOVE ’EM OR LOSE ’EM: GETTING GOOD PEOPLE TO STAY (Berrett-Koehler 1999, 2002, 2005), a bestseller she coauthored, Dr. Kaye once again proved to be a pioneer in addressing one of the most pressing workplace problems of the 21st century: retaining and engaging employees. Now in its third edition, and translated into 17 languages, LOVE ’EM OR LOSE ’EM holds managers accountable for keeping their best people and provides low to no cost actions and strategies to assist them in fulfilling their responsibility. Dr. Kaye’s research, involving thousands of workers over the years, has shown consistently that money is not the answer to retention problems. What matters much more, according to her research, are bosses who care, challenging work, an opportunity to learn and grow and colleagues whom people respect. In her follow-up companion best seller, LOVE IT, DON’T LEAVE IT: 26 WAYS TO GET WHAT YOU

WANT AT WORK (Berrett-Koehler, 2003) Dr. Kaye and her coauthor show individual workers how they can improve their work lives.

Dr. Kaye also has been a leader in developing innovative approaches to mentoring. Believing traditional one-on-one mentoring is less effective in today’s organizational structures than it was in the past, she developed “Mentworking”, a program that combines mentoring and networking in a unique way. She also advocates mentoring up as well as mentoring down -- having younger workers mentor older workers in areas where they are more adept, such as technology.

Dr. Kaye’s clients are leading global organizations including American Express, Cerner Corporation, Citigroup, Con Edison, Constellation Energy, DaimlerChrysler, Lockheed Martin, LSI Logic, Marriott, Novartis, Prudential, Starbucks, United Technologies and Wells Fargo.

She is coauthor of the classic DESIGNING CAREER DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS (Jossey Bass), and the editor of LEARNING JOURNEYS (Davies Black), an inspiring collection of essays from top management experts. Having written numerous articles in both professional journals and popular publications, she is frequently sought out by the news media for comment on workplace issues.

Dr. Kaye is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including: the National Career Development Award from ASTD; ASTD’s Best Practice Award several years in a row for her work with clients Bechtel, Chevron, Dow Corning and First USA Bank; the University Associates award for Outstanding Contributions to the field of HRD; and Speaker of the Year awards from ASTD, Los Angeles. Before earning her doctorate from UCLA, Dr Kaye did graduate work in Organizational Development at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and earned a Master’s Degree at George Washington University.
