Swampscott, MA (PRWEB) March 8, 2006
The spring allergy season begins in early March and continues until June. While children are fantasizing about trips to the playground, ballpark and other ways to enjoy the warm weather, many parents are beginning to worry about how they can protect their children from the onset of rhinitis and other allergic diseases. An innovative line of baby products called Baby Boost holds promise in helping parents protect their children from ever developing these allergic diseases.
Allergic rhinitis, or hayfever, is triggered when the body overreacts to otherwise harmless substances, such as pollens and molds, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Scientists have combed the environment for the keys to prevent, or eventually short circuit, allergic diseases from developing. Several studies, including published research in The New England Journal of Medicine, have suggested that exposure to certain environmental proteins in the first three years of life can help train a baby’s immune system and may significantly reduce their chances of ever developing allergies, asthma and other allergic diseases. However, due to urbanization and modern living, these proteins are not prevalent in the United States.
A company comprised of medical doctors and research scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and MIT are making these essential proteins available through a fabric technology called Baby Boost that can be embedded in stuffed toys, blankets and other items. The proteins are then gradually released over time into the child’s environment. Several studies have suggested that when children under the age of 4 are exposed to the natural proteins in Baby Boost, the likelihood of them developing allergic diseases may be reduced by up to 75 percent.
Allergies, particularly in the spring, have a huge impact across the country and affect up to 40% of children in the United States. Since allergies can lead to other chronic conditions such as asthma, it has become a serious concern for parents and pediatricians alike. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma rates are on the rise with cases among children increasing as much as 160% since 1980. More than 6 million children suffer from asthma, and that number is expected to climb.
“Allergies and asthma have become epidemic in children throughout the country. Although it is not possible to completely prevent allergies and asthma in young children, the knowledge and new technologies that we currently have offers hope for turning the tide on these diseases," said Dr. Simon Dao, researcher at MIT and chief research scientist behind the Baby Boost technology.
