According to independent tests conducted by Poseidon Ocean Sciences Inc., no marine organisms have adhered to the LuminOre-coated test plates after constant submersion in India’s Tuticorin Bay, one of the world’s most foulant waterways.

LuminOre Copper is a unique ‘foul release’ metal coating that is cold-sprayable onto any surface or structure, thus creating an extremely slick surface. LuminOre Copper is also 100 percent resistant to UV rays and makes any surface completely impenetrable to water.

“LuminOre Marine Copper has performed perfectly,” says Jonathan Matias, president of Poseidon Ocean Sciences, a research firm specializing in environment-friendly innovations in marine antifouling and architectural biocides. “Non-toxic antifouling compounds and substances which repel marine life, but do not harm the environment, are the focus of Poseidon’s research, and LuminOre is showing very good possibilities. We are seeing no fouling at all.”

Matias explains that most paint and coating companies test in India’s Tuticorin Bay because the location is tropical year-round and the marine environment is extremely aggressive, where barnacles are attaching every day. In comparison, waters around Florida or San Diego, for example, are sub-tropical and fouling is typically aggressive only during the summer months.

“A special, foul-release coating, LuminOre Copper offers very low toxicity to the environment and to non-target organisms, and requires very little, if any, maintenance,” says Terry Gould, president of LuminOre Industrial & Marine Coatings Inc., an official licensee of the patented LuminOre® process. “With the cold-sprayable process, we can apply LuminOre Copper to any substrate, in virtually any configuration or design. The end result is a protective copper metal surface that has proven to be effective for greater than five years in an aggressive fresh water environment, and effective for greater than eight years in an aggressive fouling salt water environment.”
