Prominent Psychologist Rips Pharmaceutical Industry For Keeping Patients Depressed
Sving Big Industries' Dollars Is Destroying The Lives Of Too Many Americans
Greensburg, PA (PRWEB) March 18, 2006 -- While the NIMH estimates that an average of 19-20 million Americans, more and more of them children, suffer from depression at any given time, a leading psychologist claims this situation is unwarranted and that many can be helped to overcome their depression permanently. Dr. Douglas Ramm, a clinical psychologist in private practice for over thirty years, accuses the pharmaceutical industry and some insurance companies of keeping people sick to increase their own monetary bottom line.
Says Dr. Ramm, "This tendency to treat all depression as if it is merely a biological malfunction is being actively promoted by the pharmaceutical industry. At one level, this industry is making an effort to persuade insurance companies that dispensing antidepressants is much less expensive than paying for psychotherapy. At another, they are making an effort to convince primary care physicians and psychiatrists, and the general public, that depression is simply a biological disorder." While Ramm agrees that pharmaceuticals can be helpful for some, he asserts that the current reliance on pills as the fix for all depression actually handicaps many from reaching full recovery.
Psychotherapy, and especially the newer, short-term therapies, has been widely proven to help depression sufferers overcome depression in a cost-effective manner. Finding a plan of action which results in a depressed person making changes in how they deal with the things, people and events of their lives leads to real and lasting recovery in the majority of cases.
