To find a place to stay anywhere on the globe take a look at the Google Earth and prepare to be amazed. Google Earth, a digital globe integrating information from the Internet, takes surfers on a journey like no other over the entire globe. Choose a location anywhere in the world and Google Earth files across continents stopping only to get off at selected destinations.
For any given location, Google Earth will show the area hotels, restaurants, golf courses and museums, all pinned neatly on the digital globe. Clicking on one of the icons and everything that a surfer could want to know is right there at her fingertips. A few more clicks and the surfer can take a virtual tour of a resort, book a round of golf or check what’s on tonight’s menu at a restaurant.
Google Earth can even check the weather or track planes coming into land at select airports, but until now, the surfer wouldn’t be able to find a bed and breakfast on the already installed lodging layer.
Google, the top Internet search engine with more than 250 million searches a day, launched Google Earth last year and included hotels, motels and resorts in its lodging layer, but the bed and breakfast industry, it seems, didn’t get invited to the party.
Pillow and Pancakes, which is one of the up and coming B&B directories with more than 8,000 listings world-wide, decided to fill that gap, says company director Roy Worthington.
“One of the advantages of the Internet was that it allowed even a small bed and breakfast to reach the market place as effectively as a large hotel, Google Earth by leaving out B&Bs from the lodging layer was changing all that,“ says Worthington. “So we decided to level the playing field for our members.’’
Pillow and Pancakes located in Silicon Valley, California with offices in Denver Colorado, Collingwood, Ontario, Canada brought in a team of technical experts to research and develop the B&B layer, which was launched on the Pillows and Pancakes site in January 2006.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, people are amazed at what Google Earth can do, we strongly believe that this is the way that people will be planning their trips in the future and we are pleased to say that the bed and breakfast industry can now be part of this technology,’’ says Worthington.
Members who supply photographs and the longitude and latitude of their bed and breakfast are automatically included in the Pillows and Pancakes Google Earth layer. For those who don’t know their latitude or longitude, finding this information is just a click away at http://www.pillowsandpancakes.com/latlongmap.html
Google Earth users can now download a customized layer with thousands of Pillows and Pancakes B&Bs pinpointed in destinations all over the globe.
Once a bed and breakfast is selected the surfer can check out nearby restaurants, bars and attractions. Tilting the view shows the surfer how high nearby mountain ranges tower above the valleys and lakes. Proximity to airports, rail stations and highways can easily be checked also.
Talking of journeys, Google Earth supplies visual directions to the B&B listing even small side roads and the locations of gas stations to make it easier for the surfer to find her way.
Google Earth uses recent satellite imagery and in highly populated areas the resolution is so sharp that people on the street can be seen. In most instances a photograph taken from space of a bed and breakfast is also available.
Take a look at Beachfront Bed & Breakfast in Saint Augustine, Florida at http://www.pillowsandpancakes.com/bnb/108449 their swimming pool is visible on Google Earth.

Future plans include adding a direct contact form to send messages directly to a B&B owner and an opportunity to view videos directly from the Pillows and Pancakes Google Earth layer.
