Chess-as-a-Learning-Tool Demonstration at the Indiana Association of Home Educators Convention

Scholastic chess coach will demonstrate materials and methods of teaching chess at the 21st Annual Home Educators in Indianapolis, Indiana, March 24-25, 2006.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 18, 2006 –- Dennis A. Jones of Atlanta-based Championship Chess will present “Chess Problems: Challenging, Fun and Creative” at the annual Indiana Association of Home Educators Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, March 24-25, 2006. Organizers expect 4,000 to 5,000 attendees at this year’s convention.

A chess coach and a former classroom teacher, Jones will also demonstrate the successful methods and materials of teaching chess that he helped develop with Stephen A. Schneider, the director of Championship Chess. Championship Chess, at Booth #106, Hall F, will also offer opportunities for children and adults to solve chess puzzles and to play chess games. Schneider is the author of The Scholastic Chess Series which includes Chess Basics, Chess Openings 1, Endgames Strategies 1 and a chess readiness activity book, Color My Chess World, that introduces pre-chess activities to very young children. A new volume in the series, Chess Tactics 1, is due out in the Spring of 2006.

As a teaching tool, chess is quickly gaining ground in schools all over the U.S. Jones will explain the academic benefits that accrue after less than a year of systematic chess study, as well as its social and emotional benefits. Championship Chess coaches have made presentations to various educator groups throughout the country, including at other educational conferences, staff development workshops and home school conventions.

Also in the Scholastic Chess Series is Color My Chess World, a chess readiness activity book, with an accompanying music CD of short, fun songs that invite kids to dance and sing along, that builds the skills to make the introduction of chess easy ― and fun ― for very young children. Its activities introduce basic chess concepts while improving spatial skills, developing math and reading readiness skills, and reinforcing skills in listening and following directions.
