World Family and Consumer Sciences Day, March 21, 2006, highlights the need for the critical life skills addressed by family and consumer sciences professionals.

With the challenges caused by recent natural disasters and other increased threats to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities across the globe, World Family and Consumer Sciences Day, March 21, 2006, highlights the need for the critical life skills addressed by family and consumer sciences (FCS) professionals.

For nearly a century, FCS professionals have been developing, integrating, and providing practical knowledge about research-based life skills—financial literacy; dietetics and nutrition; child care and parenting; conflict resolution; consumer education; housing and environment; and apparel and textiles. In the U.S., life skills are taught primarily by elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educators, Cooperative Extension educators, and professionals in business, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations. In the U.S. and abroad, FCS professionals are working to address major societal issues, such as an alarming rise in obesity rates in some countries and a lack of food in others.

The American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), which represents 8,000 FCS professionals across the U.S., joins the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) in recognizing World FCS Day. The 2005-2008 theme for World FCS Day is “Home Economics Supporting Sustainable Development and Quality of Life for All.”

To help address the need for life skills and improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities, AAFCS will be bringing together approximately 1,200 FCS and related professionals from the U.S. and other countries for the AAFCS 97th Annual Conference & Expo, LifeSkills! Solutions for Thriving in Threatening Times, June 22-25, 2006, Charlotte, NC.

During the conference, experts will present successful strategies and research on topics such as improving workplace wellness and dealing with pandemics, preparing for a disaster, helping children cope with stressful events, and preventing identity theft.

“World Family and Consumer Sciences Day is a time to recognize the work and dedication of family and consumer sciences professionals all over the world. At the AAFCS Annual Conference, they will be working on solutions to help people thrive and prosper in our increasingly complex and threatening environment,” said Carolyn W. Jackson, AAFCS transitional executive director.
