Affluent, time-crunched go-getters have discovered another form of pampering as satisfying as a day spa treatment -- hiring their own Professional Organizing Consultant (POC). POCs help transform vast wardrobes, massive paperwork, and swelling accumulations of collectibles into sleek, productive places.
“Clients are genuinely relieved when they see their spaces remade into organized working rooms,” says Karli Bertocchi, owner of Organized With Style. “Most people want to be organized, but their busy lives get the better of them and before they know it their closets and offices are a mess. At that point they usually don’t have the time or motivation to tackle the project themselves.”
That is where professional organizing consults are cleaning up…literally. POCs study your space and lifestyle and then design efficient layouts that create harmonious working spaces. While the process can be somewhat stressful, not unlike a deep tissue massage, the result is a much-needed release of stress. POCs are part designer, part psychologist, and part motivational coach, while providing a good deal of elbow grease. Karli works hands-on with clients to purge items that are getting in the way of a person’s productivity, and helps clarify the things that are important to client’s lifestyle goals. She also sticks around until the job gets done, helping to move furniture, file paperwork and bag up and remove the purged items.
The explosion in home offices, eBay, and bigger houses with bigger closets all contribute to this trend. Just look at the numbers: 20 years ago the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) started with five members. In 2004 there were 2,343 members. Today there are more than 3,200, a 37% increase and the largest number of members ever to join during a 12-month period.
Besides the advantage of efficient and clean spaces, hiring a POC can turn a profit for some lucky clients. “Some clients have me drop off their items at a local eBay store. One client was pleasantly surprised when an old beat-up trumpet bought at a garage sale 20 years ago sold for almost $1,500,” says Karli. “What other service can make you feel good, clean the house, help it stay that way, and put some cash in your pocket?”
According to Karli, “The most gratifying part of being a professional organizer is seeing the weight released off my client’s shoulders when they see their new space. At first some fear the process, but by the end they are hugging me in appreciation. On the surface it may seem like we are just rearranging stuff, but if it is your stuff you want to know that it is being cared for. It’s a very personal process.”
It must be the reason busy professionals are considering professional organizers as their new day spa.
