Independent apparel label Twospace releases debut collection at Market Week in Los Angeles and StyleMax in Chicago.

Twospace ( is launching it's first widely available collection of contemporary casual women's clothing and jewelry during Market Week in Los Angeles and StyleMax in Chicago.

Founded by artists Christine Haynes and Kent Bell, Twospace humbly began in an industrial loft above a liquor store in Chicago, Illinois. Both partners were the products of formal art school educations, (the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Indiana University’s Hope School of Fine Arts, respectively). As such, their original focus was on one-of-a-kind, highly conceptual pieces.

As demand grew and many styles went into limited studio production, the team’s designs saw a natural shift to the wearable, modern and minimalist aesthetic that remains at the heart of the company today. Ever expanding, the business was moved to Venice, California in 2004.

Haynes explains, “We had to make a decision to either continue to make each piece ourselves, or take it to the next level commercially speaking. That's when we decided to take the plunge and design a full collection.”

With the debut collection, Twospace has come into full view of the fashion industry. The collection will be on view at Los Angeles’ fashion week March 23-28 in the A Priori showroom in the Cooper Design Building, followed by Chicago’s StyleMax show April 1-5, 2006 in the Merchandise Mart.

“Many designers In L.A. casually dismiss shows outside of LA and New York," Bell said. "We lived for years in [Chicago neighborhood] Wicker Park. There's a toughness there and a fashion sense that would knock your socks off. We know that underestimating the hundreds of hip boutiques in the Midwest could be a big mistake."

The Twospace collection is a combination of the urban, bold aesthetic of Chicago's art scene, and the comfortable and easy to wear fit of the west coast. Despite the two seemingly different influences, all Twospace products are born from a single philosophy. “We try to design that favorite dress that you always look and feel good in" Haynes explains, "It can be the one garment that you can wear out on the town with heels, or to the beach with flip flops.”
