Nashville-based psychologist, business ethics training expert and consultant, Dr. Christopher Bauer, has been awarded the Certified Fraud Specialist (CFS) designation by the American Association of Certified Fraud Specialists. This designation is awarded to only a small number of professionals each year and there are fewer than one thousand CFS recipients in the country.
Although most CFS recipients are in law enforcement, forensic accounting, or auditing, Dr. Bauer’s unique approach to ethics training was recognized by the ACFS as making a major contribution to companies' and associations' abilities to combat fraud. His background as a clinical psychologist largely informs his approach to ethics training and he uses his knowledge of psychology to help audiences see how they can make better decisions. "After all," he says, "once we know the rules, better ethics is mostly about making sure that our personal wishes, values, and working styles don't interfere -- consciously or not - with our ability to make good choices. Examining and fine-tuning our personal choices is among the central goals of clinical psychology and so this work is a great fit for my background."
Rather than simply teaching the about ethics code or case law as is so often the case in ethics training, Dr. Bauer’s programs help audiences reduce their risk of ethics violations by providing them with easy but essential 'real-world' ideas and tools that they can put into practice immediately. These programs are designed to help audiences really 'walk the talk' of great ethics rather than simply subjecting them to another dry review of ethics codes or corporate codes of conduct, says Dr. Bauer. His other goal is to make ethics training fun. "Too many employees have gotten burned sitting through ethics programs that are completely academic and dry as a bone," he says. "Ethics are too important to make people feel like there is no fun in learning about them," he goes on, " I want them have a serious learning experience but to be able to laugh while they're doing it!" His audiences have routinely said that his programs have allowed them to do both.
In addition to his keynotes and seminars, Dr Bauer publishes a free “Weekly Ethics Thought”. Subscriptions are available on his website (http://www.bauerethicsseminars.com).
